Bobbi Trout remembers the day she stood with Amelia Earhart under a
set of bleachers as they talked about forming the first organized
group of women pilots. "I think we can do this," Amelia said to Bobbi.
And so they did. In 1929, they sent out 117 letters to all the licesened women pilots
of the time. The letter stated that if the women wanted to join, they were to sign the by-laws
and it would cost them $1 to become a charter member. Ninety-nine licensed women pilots
responded, so they formed a group for the
mutual support and advancement of aviation, and they called themselves
the Ninety-Nines.
Amelia Earhart was the first President. She and Bobbi Trout
were charter members.
Amelia's face is recognized throughout the world. The
Ninety-Nines, now owners of the Amelia Earhart's birthplace in Atchison, Kansas, and
Trustees to her estate, have given permission to private pilot Cheryl Baker
to use Amelia's likeness for this commissioned art print. It's a
classic.
