Pancho Barnes was a barnstorming aerobatic stunt pilot and a
dear friend of Bobbi Trout. Bobbi likes to tell
the story of how she, Pancho and Mary Charles were hired to fly to New York
under a Gilmore Oil sponsorship. All of their Travel Air airplanes were painted
yellow with a red lion on the side. If all three ships made it to New York,
Gilmore was going to hire them to tour the United States. Each pilot had a co-pilot/passenger, but
Mary Charles and Patty Willis ran out of gas over the meteor crater and made a forced
landing destroying their landing gear. Bobbi and Pancho flew safely into New York City
and made a circle around the Statue of Liberty. Their stay
in New York City is a story in itself. But, of course, Pancho didn't
go anywhere that she didn't create a story.
